Mountain Girl Meets Miami

Stacy Jo on the beach

Falling in love with surf, culture and energy.

Last month, I had the opportunity to visit Miami. Since I’m a mountain and lake person, I was initially ambivalent. I was not thinking about adventure or having an open mind. When I arrived, a soul from a different part of the South met the high-rise heat, neon nights, and the unexpected beauty of contrast. Bright colors, palm trees, and a diverse mix of people surrounded me. Wonderful!

I was suddenly surrounded by a new world of unique food, sand, and sea breezes. We stayed in a nice hotel on the crystal blue ocean, so I was true in thinking, “What’s not to like?” But I learned it was the energy from the people I encountered that made me fall in love with Miami.

Usually, if I hear a language spoken near me, for example, in a restaurant, I can place it as Spanish, French, Russian, or German. But there were others from Europe and Africa that I was unfamiliar with. The large Jewish community provided Kosher beach clubs and their ambulance service, Hatzalah South Florida. I was not aware of those aspects from the Orthodox Jewish world, but they made complete sense. Just down the beach was a Russian and Turkish Bath. I would have liked to learn more, but that might have required me to get off my lounge chair. My priority was to watch the ocean tide and listen to the surf while sitting under an umbrella. Thanks for taking a minute to walk with me from the creek to the coastline.
