Neo-Hippies and Bohemians and Hippie Chicks, oh my!

What is modern hippie culture?

Ask this question, and you’ll often hear comparisons to the 1960s counterculture. Some say today’s version is a watered-down remix. Others believe the original movement has been romanticized and commercialized—after all, Disney has a “Hippie Dippie” pool. Enough said.

But from neo-hippies to bohemians to self-proclaimed Hippie Chicks, today’s free spirits are redefining what it means to live authentically, consciously, and creatively.

I see the ’60s counterculture as a powerful movement that pushed boundaries—fighting for civil rights, protesting war, and questioning authority. Modern hippie culture complements that legacy with a different kind of radicalism: choosing to slow down, live mindfully, take accountability, and act with intention. Each movement fits the needs of its time. Society needs both: one to break through, and one to ground and balance.

It comes down to the priorities of being a good human. Whether you resonate with the neo-hippie spirit, the bohemian lifestyle, or simply embrace Hippie Chick living, the core values remain: openness, thoughtful decision-making, and the belief that we’re all part of something bigger than ourselves.

My personal values as a Hippie Chick are simple. Just a daily return to kindness, authenticity, and a heart that’s open to growth.
